CD Printing For Professional Looking CDs

It used to be that creating your own CDs that looked as good as the ones commercially available was considered a tedious, if not impossible, job. But with the advent of the latest CD printing devices at affordable prices, one can burn a CD that looks as good as those found in stores.

The only option that used to be available for adding text and images to your CDs was a labeling kit. Earlier versions of these kits were complicated to use. The newer versions are more user-friendly and sophisticated, and they provide more freedom to display your creativity.

Although most CDs with labels work fine, sometimes there can be a problem with very fast drives. An additional CD label glued to the CD introduces a little bit of unbalance which might cause unacceptable levels of vibration, and occasionally these vibrations have been known to damage the CD drive. For this reason and a few others, you may want to print directly to the CD. CD printing is usually done with an offset printer. However, in some cases silk-screen printing may be used.

There are a few companies that specialize in the work of CD printing. For an extra fee, these businesses will provide graphic services such as designing the artwork for the customer. The printing provided by these services can give a highly professional look to the discs, as they print in full color with high-resolution graphics, and normally also provide a matching case wrap. This may be a custom made case or a standard CD case.

A little bit about the actual mechanics of the printing process: The plates are made of aluminum or paper. Aluminum is costlier than paper but it is preferred because it gives better quality prints. The multi-colored final output has four basic colors-black, blue, yellow and red. Each color uses a separate plate. Rollers are used to apply paint on the plates. The plates in turn transfer the ink onto a rubber blanket from where the ink gets transported to the optical disc in order to facilitate printing.

If you intend to be doing CD printing on a continuing basis or just like to be hands-on, you might be interested in puchasing your own printer, as opposed to contracting with a printing company. One can find a good unit by surveying the marketplace and comparing the offerings, company track record, online reviews, and the prices of various printers. For example, there is the Canon Pixma iP4200 CD printer. It's said to provide superior photo quality, and has a in-built ChromaLife100 that serves as the picture protection system. This ensures that the CD printout lasts longer. Another example is Epson Stylus Photo R220. This has an advanced Micro Piezo ink jet system, and a built-in individualized ink cartridge.
